Article : Jokowi Unveils Eight New Mobile Power Plants

Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo unveiled eight mobile power plants with a collective capacity of 500 megawatts, on Saturday (19/03) in a bid to make good on his commitment to provide affordable electricity for all Indonesians.

Jokowi marked the start of operations for the power plants at the inauguration ceremony of the mobile power plant in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, over the weekened. Other power plants that will begin operations include Jeranjang-Lombok and Air Anyir-Bangka, each with a capacity of 2×25 megawatts; Tarahan-Lampung and Pontianak with a 4×25 MW capacity each; Balai Pungut-Riau and Paya Pasir-Medan, with 3×25 MW capacity each and Suge-Belitung and Nias, with a capacity of 1×25 MW each.

“Today, I have inaugurated gas-powered mobile power plants with a total power capacity of 500 megawatts at eight different locations. Our people need electricity for industry, factories, the tourism sector and also households. They are still waiting to get electricity,” Jokowi said during the ceremony.

“The reason we quickly built the power plants is because of residents’ overwhelming complaints that there is a lack of electricity in every province, city and district across our country. Why did we choose to build mobile power plants? Because they are faster to build. If we built coal-powered plants, it would have taken four to five years. But this, we can build this one fast,” he added.

The central government believes that the additional plants will help power up to 100,000 households across the archipelago. The plants, according to the government, will also play a key role in accelerating economic growth and development in some of the country’s most outlying provinces.

Jokowi recently inaugurated six megaprojects in various provinces, including the Air Anyir floating gas power plant in the Bangka-Belitung Islands.

The president also opened two new units of a geothermal power station in Minahasa, North Sulawesi, in December last year and an additional unit at a power plant in Lampung, South Sumatra.

Indonesia has received financial investments from various foreign institutions, including the Islamic Development Bank, which approved a $330 million loan to state utility company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to expand power transmission infrastructure in Java, Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

That project will provide an additional 10,135-megavolt ampere, which contributes to the government’s ambitious 35,000-megawatt power plant construction program set to be completed by 2019.
